Rick is kicking off 2006 with the release of a new solo collection of songs called “Blue and Brokenhearted” featuring lots of twang, some bluegrass and a handful of progressive acoustic material. Rick produced the new collection with stellar guitar player, producer engineer, Doug Wilken and got a lot of help from Maven’s bandmates Pete Freeman on pedal steel and dobro, Jeff Berman on drums and percussion, Mark Evans on mandolin, Dog Run Boy, Don Shean on fiddle and banjo, and Pittsburgh-based musicians, Gerry Borish on acoustic bass, and Don Bishkoff on the cello. Some of the material was inspired by The Mavens who have become a honky-tonk and western swing fan favorite in Western Pennsylvania over the last few years, but the rest of the material grew out of a revitalized singer songwriter scene in Pittsburgh which Rick has been an active part of. According to Rick, “I’ve just really gotten back into creating and revamping lots of new and old material for just guitar and voice and listening to a lot of stripped down rootsy music and it’s resulted in some of the best stuff that I’ve ever written. I also had a blast working with Doug. He’s simply the go-to guy around here when it comes to shaping and recording twang and acoustic music and his musicianship added so much value and fun to the project.”
