Bernie Cunningham – In 2002, Bernie Cunningham finally got around to doing what he was born to do – release a recording of traditional bluegrass music. According to former Dog Run Boys’ bandmate Bob Artis who wrote the liner notes for I’m Going Back, “those who’ve heard Bernie Cunningham sing bluegrass have been waiting a long time for this collection. It’s the first project under his own name, and the first to feature nothing but straight-ahead bluegrass. And it couldn ’t be more welcome.”

According to “Bluegrass Unlimited”, Backed by first-class pickers, it is Cunningham’s lead vocals that turn this recording into a special event. For authentic bluegrass executed by an extremely talented singer, Bernie Cunningham’s “I’m Going Back”, is one memorable musical treasure.”

I’m Going Back” was also chosen as one of the best bluegrass albums of the year by WYEP’s Bruce Mountjoy.

Bernie has been in the center of Western Pennsylvania’s bluegrass scene for more than 30 years. His pure mountain tenor and talent on guitar, mandolin, bass and banjo have been featured as a member of “Second Wind”, “The Dog Run Boys” and Steel City Bluegrass”. He has also filled in on bass regularly for “Mac Martin and the Dixie Travelers” and “The Beaver Creek Bluegrass Band.”

In 2004, he intends to focus exclusively on playing traditional bluegrass with the Allegheny Drifters a band that he is forming with Bob and Karen Artis. Check the concert page for new developments.
